Former actress Twinkle Khanna, who is now an author, talked about balancing different roles as a woman recently. She pointed out that despite advocating for equality in marriage, household tasks like cooking, house chores and childcare still often fall on women’s shoulders. Twinkle, who is married to actor Akshay Kumar, shared her thoughts during a conversation with Faye D’Souza on Tweak India.
“We’re women who think that we are fairly progressive, and yet, this food, the house, the curtains, the diapers – it’s still our job, along with having a full-time job. What have we done to ourselves? Feminism has come and bitten us in the a**. I was this big flag bearer of equality. But equality has meant double the work. It’s not okay. So I’m equal; you will treat me with respect, but I’m doing double of everything. It’s tough either way,” she said.
She added, “It’s tough if you don’t work because then, there are other consequences of that. There’s a certain independence that you enjoy when you are working because you feel a little bit like saying, ‘Okay, I’m bringing this much to the table, so I have a right to sit at this table.’”
In the mornings, when Twinkle’s daughter Nitara sees her working on the computer, Nitara assumes she’s busy. Although Twinkle wants to spend time together, she feels the need to return to work to make the most of her valuable hours. “They’re going to wind up in therapy regardless and blame us. So, I’m not worried about that,” Twinkle joked.
Recently, Akshay praised Twinkle on her graduation and wrote, “Two years ago, when you told me you wanted to take up studies all over again, I wondered if you meant it. But the day I saw you work so hard and perfectly manage a full-fledged student life along with home, career, me, and kids, I knew I had married a superwoman.”
Twinkle Khanna and Akshay Kumar have been going strong for 23 years now. They are blessed with two children, Aarav and Nitara.
