The CBI on Wednesday arrested two directors of a New Delhi-based private company in a scam related to the widening of the runway at the Karipur International Airport.
The arrested are B R Arora and M P Madhu Nair, directors of Arora Associates in New Delhi, which had won the contract for runway construction. The CBI produced the accused before the Ernakulam CBI Special Court. The court remanded Madhu Nair in CBI custody for two days, and Arora was remanded in judicial custody. Arora was sent to the Kakkanad district jail.
The CBI had arraigned former airport senior manager Prakash Kachnger, former senior assistant N Sreedhar, former assistant manager Bino Baby, and Arora and Associates as accused in the case.
The case is that the accused officials conspired with them and caused heavy loss to the government.
The Airports Authority of India awarded the work to Arora and Associates on January 19, 2007. The amount earmarked for the work was `17.32 crore. The CBI has found that there was a misappropriation of `53,06,578, mainly by using fake invoices. The CBI stated that the officials, including senior managers, had a role in misappropriating the funds.
CBI Inspector J R D’Cruz submitted that the investigation of the case was at a crucial stage, and several crucial witnesses are from New Delhi have to be examined. Arora and Madhu Nair are influential people.
“If they are released on bail, they will influence the witnesses, destroy evidence and may abscond,” the CBI said.
The CBI also submitted that custodial interrogation of the accused - Madhu Nair - was essential in the case.
