TIRUCHY: The marriage of a 15-year-old girl, who is set to appear for the SSLC public examination this year, was put off after the intervention of the officials here on Friday. Sources said, the marriage between a 15-year-old girl from Egiriyamangalam near Woraiyur and an unemployed youth Vinod Kumar (24) was to take place on March 11. When the parents approached a marriage hall in Manachanallur, the authorities demanded the age proof certificate. As they failed to produce it, they were denied the hall. However, they were firm on the marriage plan and decided to hold the wedding ceremonies at the girl’s home on the scheduled day. On  Feb 6 the district social welfare officer Yasodhai received an anonymous letter, with a wedding invitation, seeking official intervention to stop the marriage. On Thursday, a team, led by the DSWO, rescued the girl and handed her over to the Childline. The girl, who was tight-lipped initially and did not want to divulge any information, said she disliked the marriage. As per the wish of her parents, she accepted the offer. “I will study well and become a teacher”, the girl said.
