MALAPPURAM: Teachers under the Federation of Higher Secondary Teachers Association (FHSTA) boycotted valuation camps across state on Wednesday. Pro-Muslim League Kerala Higher Secondary Teachers Union (KHSTU) refrained from the protest. The valuation process was disrupted in almost all the centres in Malappuram district. Leaders of the FHSTA gathered at the valuation centre at the Malappuram Government Boys High School and shouted slogans against those who came for duty. They also shouted slogans in support of Oommen Chandy and Aryadan Mohammed to express their protest over the stance taken by KHSTU. The police reached the spot and took steps to avoid tension between the two groups. Only 62 out of 300 teachers came for the duty at the centre.FHSTA launched the protest raising various demands including steps to rectify anomalies in salary revision, increase in the paper valuation allowance and creation of clerk and peon posts at higher secondary level. The association had held a meeting with the Education Minister on April 11 to discuss all these matters.“The meeting failed to reach a agreeement. We did not get any assurance from the minister that he would consider our demands. So we were forced to go for a token strike,” said FHSTA leader Jose John. However, KHSTU refrained from the strike saying that the minister had agreed to the demands. FHSTA alleged that KHSTU took this stand only a couple of days ago, and that they were with them while the strike had been declared after the meeting with the minister failed.FHSTA leaders said they would strengthen the protest if their demands were not met even after the token strike.
