KANCHEEPURAM: Eleven persons, including Balakrishnan, son of Thirukazhukuntram DMK councillor (representing Paramasivam Nagar) Jayalakshmi, were taken into custody by the police on Tuesday for brewing and selling country-made illicit liquor. The other 10 who have been arrested under the Prohibition Act have been identified as Anal Ayyappan (Koovathur), Rani (Edaiyur Colony), Jothi (Nallur West Colony), Sevittu Natarajan (Chembakkam), Rajeshwari (Periyanatham), and Thanusu, Sulokchana, Roopavathi, Sathiyavani and Anjalai of Paramasivam Nagar in Thirukazhukuntram.According to police, early in the morning, an isolated house in Natarajapuram hamlet near Padalam witnessed a flurry of activity. On suspicion, police raided the house and recovered 1,575 litres of country liquor stored in 45 cans of 35-litre capacity each. A Ford car, two Pulsar bikes and a gunny bag full of polythene envelopes meant for storing the illicit liquor, totally valued at `20 lakh, were also seized.Further probe led to the arrest of Sankar (32), his wife Pachaiammal and Sankar’s elder brother Manikandan. ADSP Umaiyal, who led the raid, said that the illicit trade was carried out with the backing of DMK councillor Jayalakshmi.
