We often hear about various restrictions and bizarre laws for women residing in Muslim countries. There are several laws related to dress codes, musical preferences, and many more. There are even restrictions that are related to dining in restaurants. In recent times, we have seen many countries breaking the old taboos with the aim of spreading the voice of freedom for all. Today we will talk about one Muslim country that elected a woman prime minister in the 1980s. Do you know the name of the country? Let us find out the answer here. Many South-Asian countries had a woman prime minister in the twentieth century. India’s then-prime minister was Indira Gandhi, while S Bandaranaike was the prime minister of Sri Lanka. The country we are talking about today is Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto was the first woman prime minister of any Muslim country ever. In the year 1988, Benazir Bhutto was elected as the prime minister of the country. She was just 35 years old. The woman was known for her leadership quality back in that era.
According to a report by BBC, Benazir Bhutto wanted to join the Pakistan Foreign Services but her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan wanted her to join the field of Politics. She is one of the most well-known prime ministers of Pakistan till date. Her initial political steps were guided by her father. As she emerged as a great leader by winning the elections, she was confronted by the military of the country. The country was going through serious political turmoil when Bhutto came into power. The military coup of the country also tried to spread propaganda against the great leader. Despite such challenges she emerged as a fine leader. On December 27, 2007, Benazir was killed in a suicide bomb attack while she was returning from a campaign that was held in Rawalpindi.
After getting inspired by the life of Benazir Bhutto, many women in Pakistan joined politics. Today thousands of women work in top positions in the country. Even today people of the country remember her for her great works and leadership qualities.
