Mumbai: A Punjab police official, Jagdish Singh, who has won the Arjuna Award as wrestler, was arrested with three accomplices for allegedly carrying banned party drugs worth nearly Rs 20 crore, an official said on Tuesday.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) carried out an operation yielding 25 kg of methamphetamine, worth around Rs 20 crore in the international market, the official said.
Jagdish Singh is a wrestler of international repute and had been conferred the top national award for sportspersons in 1998. He is also an inspector with the Punjab police but is currently under suspension.
He and his accomplices Harvinder Singh, Harjinder Singh and Veer Bahadur Singh arrived in Mumbai from Punjab on Sunday and were staying in a suburban hotel, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, the NCB sleuths nabbed the four when they were attempting to deliver the drugs consignment to some unknown people at the Oberoi Mall in suburban Goregaon late on Monday evening, according to police.
They were taken to a court, which remanded them to police custody till June 12, the official said.
In the past six months, this is the second instance of a police official being caught in a narcotics case from Mumbai.
Saji Mohan, an Indian Police Service officer, was nabbed on January 17 along with two accomplices with a consignment of over 12 kg of heroin worth Rs 12 crore by the Anti-Terroriss Squad.
Saji, of the 1995 batch officer and a former zonal director of the NCB Chandigarh, was the deputy director of Enforcement Directorate at Kochi, when he was arrested.
