THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Wing of the Indian Psychiatric Society is launching a statewide ‘Clinic to Community’ campaign to uproot the stigma existing in the society towards people with psychic disorders and to create awareness in the society to cultivate a conducive approach to psychological problems, said  Dr A J John, president, Indian Psychiatric Society Kerala, at a press conference here on Thursday. The campaign intends to take the idea to the society to let people know in detail the various facets of psychic disorders.Severe psychic problems like depression, mania, bipolar mood disorder and schizophrenia now have effective treatment available in medical science. Genetic factors, differences in the level of hormones inside the brain and superstitions all pave way to such disorders. These days, drug addiction and liquor consumption add to the rise in psychic disorders among people. To some extent the major reason behind the failure in treatment owes to late diagnosis. Early detection hardly happens in many cases, Dr John said.According to him, schizophrenia is found in one among a population of 100. A large  number of schizophrenia cases are seen in an age group of 18-28. If diagnosed at an early stage, many cases can be rectified.Deputy Speaker N Shakthan will inaugurate the campaign at Loyola College on Friday at 3 pm.
