NILAMBUR: The UDF lost power in Moothedam panchayat after the Indian Union Muslim League members voted in support of the no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition on Tuesday. The CPM brought the motion against panchayat president P Usman who was ruling the panchayat with the support of four IUML and seven Congress members. The ruling coalition managed to secure only seven votes against eight in the voting. It was a setback for the IUML leadership in the district, which quickly expelled the four IUML panchayat members from the party for supporting the motion.Earlier, the party leadership had issued a whip to these members to vote against the motion. But they rejected it and voted along with CPM members. The Congress and IUML state leaders had tried in vain to settle the dispute. Panchayat vice-president Usha Sachithanandan submitted her resignation on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of the no-trust motion against her.“We are ready to continue in the panchayat as a responsible Opposition by respecting the majority’s decision. If the IUML leadership was sincere in issuing a whip to its members, it was also responsible to take disciplinary action against them. They have to move the court to quash the result in the no-trust motion citing the members voted against the whip,” P Usman, the ousted panchayat president said.
