Chandigarh: Sarabjit Singh, who is facing death penalty in Pakistan on charges of carrying out blasts in Lahore, has found some more support. He is currently lodged in a Lahore jail.
The support comes from a group of youth from Haryana, who are campaigning to garner support to save him.
A Haryana based social organisation Jan Adhikar Kartavya Samiti embarked on a relay yatra from Bhiwani to Delhi on Monday and reached Chandigarh on Wednesday before further proceeding to Amritsar.
The yatra was received in Chandigarh by Haryana's Irrigation Minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav.
Giving details about the yatra, the Samiti's president Kanwarbir Singh said that the whole country was concerned about the plight of Sarabjit Singh, whose family has already submitted a mercy appeal to Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf.
He said later in the evening they would be paying obeisance at the Harmandar Sahib (Golden Temple) at Amritsar and praying for Sarabjit's release.
"Tomorrow, we will proceed to his native village Bhikiwind in Amritsar district and meet the family members and the villagers. From there we will cover a distance of 151 km on foot to Dabwali which is located on Punjab-Haryana border and garner support from the people along the way in Sarabjit's favour," he said.
The Samiti president also informed that on May 1, the campaigners will go to Ajmer Sharief and offer our prayers there.
Capt Yadav said that Sarabjit Singh's case was a clear cut case of mistaken identity and hoped the Pakistan Government would take a "lenient view and set him free".
