New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Friday successfully completed tunneling work between Shalimar Bagh and Azadpur underground metro stretch after a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) breakthrough at Shalimar Bagh construction site.

The Tunnel Boring Machine completed the tunneling of a 1448.40 metre long stretch from Azadpur to Shalimar Bagh consisting of 1,260 rings. The initial drive of tunnelling for this stretch (i.e. from Azadpur to Shalimar Bagh) had commenced on January 9.

The tunnel is at 18 meters depth at Azadpur and 16 meters at Shalimar Bagh. Six cross-passages have been made on this stretch at a depth of 30 meters. Tunnelling for the other tunnel of 1443.50 meters is also expected to be completed within a fortnight.

While carrying out construction for this stretch, the DMRC constructed 20 meters underneath the existing Northern Railways Ambala track near Azadpur. Approximately, 80 trains run per day through this main railway line and the metro construction was done without hampering the railway traffic for even a single day.

This section is a part of 59 km long Majlis Park - Shiv Vihar corridor of Phase III network that consists of about 14 kms of underground lines.
