Shah Rukh Khan opened up about his late parents, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan and Lateef Fatima, in a recent interview. The actor, who lost his parents before he made his Bollywood debut, made a heartwarming comment about making films for them. SRK said he makes films big so that his parents from heaven could watch them. The actor added that he thinks his mother became a star in the sky.
Appearing on the Locarno Meets podcast, Shah Rukh said, “There came a time that we wouldn’t be doing it, and I moved on. But I was very keen to do such a film in my career. My parents had passed away by the time I joined films; both of them were not alive. I don’t know, for some reason, I always felt I’ll make films that are very big, so that my mom and dad can see them from heaven,” he said.
Confessing that it might sound ‘childish’, Shah Rukh said, “I still think my mom’s a star, and it works. I think I even know the star she is.” Shah Rukh added that he believes his mother would have liked watching him in Devdas. “She would appreciate it,” he said.
“In spite of senior actors telling me, ‘Don’t do it,’ I just wanted to do it, maybe just to tell my mom, ‘Hey mom, I did Devdas.’ For me, it was that first and also working with Mr. Bhansali,” the actor added.
Devdas was released in 2002. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film starred Shah Rukh in the titular role while Aishwarya Rai played Paro. Madhuri Dixit was seen Chandramukhi whereas Jackie Shroff played Chunnilal. The film was a massive success. Shah Rukh bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the performance. The film won five national awards as well.
