KOCHI: With the CBI finding major irregularities in the functioning of Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha (DBHPS) following a raid at the organisation’s Kochi office, some of the current and former board members have come forward pinning the blame on the current administration.A board member admitted that there were irregularities in the election process of the DBHPS. “In 2006 when the election for board members were held, some of the candidates issued membership to more than 2000 people, mostly to family members to help them win. Smelling foul play, the ruling board members stood away from the election. There were also indications that some of the members gave bogus votes in the election,” the member added. K P Haridas, a former board member, raised allegations of large scale corruption in the organisation. “Irregularities were there in the fund utilization too. The organisation was provided with 80 percent grant. This was diverted for other purposes. The Central government had allotted `12 lakh for distance education courses, which were again under utilised. `30 lakh was allocated for the renovation of the office building, but the fund was misused and minimal renovation was carried out,” said Haridas.DBHPS was all set to appoint a special board member, for which names of VS Achuthanandan, V R Krishna Iyer and Thennala Balakrishnan were recommended. Instead a friend of a top board member’s son got appointed as the special member. The said person has a criminal background and was accused in a kidnapping case. “Last year an employee with 12 years of service was terminated without giving him pension or gratuity. Several employees are not given their full salary either. The corruption is so severe that even the central committee of the organisation was all set to take action against the DBHPS Kerala unit,” Haridas said.
