How to Deal with Haters

Ignore them and don’t take it personally. “What someone else believes is outside of your control, and there may or may not be a valid reason,” according to Eddins. Most haters enjoy getting a reaction out of someone, and they want to validate themselves by making others feel bad. Instead of acknowledging their comments, ignore them and understand that they’re insecure, jealous, or fearful of you. If you don’t want to confront your hater, change your routine to minimize contact. You could take a different path when walking or use a different bathroom, for example.

Project confidence and prioritize your mental health. “Focus on your own self-worth and surround yourself with people who love and support you,” says Eddins. Staying positive is the best way to get back at a hater, so invest your time and energy into personal development. You can start by exploring new hobbies, repeating positive affirmations, and being kinder to yourself. Eddins also recommends “gaining clarity on your values.” What kind of person do you want to be in friendships and other relationships? What steps can you take in that direction? These are things you have control over, instead of worrying about haters.

Confront your hater and set clear boundaries. If someone is being rude or negative towards you, “create energetic or physical boundaries between you and that person,” says Chang. Confronting them directly may help release any tension or jealousy, as long as you approach them gently and remain calm. Remember, the goal is to diffuse the situation and understand why they’re acting this way! You could say, “Have I done something to hurt or offend you? You seem to be taking a lot of negativity out on me, and I don’t know where it’s coming from.” If they’re still rude towards you and won’t explain themselves, clearly state what behavior you will and will not tolerate. You could say, “You’ve been extremely rude to me, and I’m not going to sit here and listen to you anymore. The next time you insult me, I’m going to report you to the counselor.”

Seek support if you’re struggling to cope with the hate. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist if a hater goes from petty insults to direct threats. In this situation, ignoring them or taking the high road may not be enough. “Find your cheerleaders in life and let them know you’re hurting and need some support,” says Eddins. If you’re being cyberbullied, don’t delete anything. Emails, messages, and chat logs can be used as evidence if things escalate and the authorities are involved.

What's your reaction?
