THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One could say that the professional hazards that an employee at a sub-registrar office is prone to is nil. But the case of the employees of the Sub-Registrar Office at Sasthamangalam is different. The eight employees are under constant fear during office hours that the building, which is in a dilapidated condition, might fall over them anytime. Besides various land transactions that take place under their jurisdiction, the office staff have to deal with a more serious issue - of their health. They are in danger of being harmed by a protruding iron rod or a falling chunk of roof. This is in addition to the dust from the attic, which they have to inhale during duty hours. The office staff, who wish not to be named, however, say that more than their own health, they are worried about the safety of the numerous documents stored in the office. The office deals with the land transactions in Vattiyoorkavu, Peroorkada and Sasthamangalam villages. There are over 1,500 documents kept here which, if damaged, would affect the lives of thousands of people in the city. There also has not been a single maintenance work carried out on the building since the office started functioning in it. ‘’The building is over 40 years old and the walls are not even weather-proof. Moisture comes inside the office easily during rains and this puts the documents stored here in danger of a termite attack,’’ said an employee. According to the employees, they are still forced to continue in the old building owing to the delay on the part of the government in giving sanction for a new office space.
