How to Mute a Channel on Slack
Muting a channel in Slack temporarily blocks all notification sounds and alerts from that channel. You can mute a channel in Slack from within the channel's settings icon at the top of the screen, or you can mute all Slack notifications at once for a set period of time by entering "Do Not Disturb" (DND) mode from within the notifications tab next to the team name. If you find that you're part of an entirely undesired channel, you can leave the channel completely at any time.
Steps

Muting a Channel

Open Slack's website. You can do this on any browser of your choosing. If you're using the Slack app for Android, iPhone, or Windows phone, tap the app to open Slack.

Click "Sign in" at the bottom of the page. This will redirect you to a team name entry field. On mobile, this should say "Sign in to an existing team".

Enter your team's name, then click "Continue". This should take you to your team's Slack conversation. On mobile, tap "Go" to continue. You'll also have to enter your Slack-associated email address and its corresponding password.

Click on the channel you wish to mute. Each channel contains a conversation, whether between two individuals or an entire group. Channels are listed on the left side of the screen. On mobile, swipe right to open the channel menu, then tap the channel you want to mute.

Click on the gear symbol to open the Channel Settings menu. This menu is located to the left of the search bar at the top of the screen. On mobile, tap the "#[channel name]" in the top left of your screen to open the settings menu.

Click the "mute #[channel name]" option to mute the channel. This will prevent you from receiving notifications from that particular channel; however, you will still be able to access the channel at any time. On mobile, tap the "Notifications" option, then tap "Mute Channel" at the bottom of the menu. You can unmute the channel by tapping the "Mute Channel" option again.

Unmute the channel when you're ready. Going back to the Channel Settings menu and clicking "unmute #[channel name]" will restore notifications. You can also click the bell with a slash through it next to the channel name whilst in the channel itself to unmute the channel.

Using Do Not Disturb Mode

Open Slack's website. You can do this on any browser of your choosing. If you're using the Slack app for Android, iPhone, or Windows phone, tap the app to open Slack.

Click "Sign in" at the bottom of the page. This will redirect you to a team name entry field. On mobile, this should say "Sign in to an existing team".

Enter your team's name, then click "Continue". This should take you to your team's Slack conversation. On mobile, tap "Go" to continue. You'll also have to enter your Slack-associated email address and its corresponding password.

Click the notifications icon next to your team name. This resembles a bell; you can find the team name at the top left side of your screen. On mobile, swipe left to open the task bar and tap "Settings" to open the settings menu.

Click or tap the "Do Not Disturb Schedule" option. This opens the DND schedule preferences. You can also click or tap one of the "Snooze" options to temporarily mute your team's notifications for a certain amount of time.

Set a span of time for which to disable notifications from your team. You can do this from within the DND schedule menu by clicking the first box with a time in it on the left and selecting a start time, then selecting an end time in the box on the right. Be sure to double-check the AM/PM settings for your preferred times so you don't miss out on important notifications. On mobile, tap the "From" box to set the initial time and the "To" box to set the end time.

Click the "X" in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. This will save your changes. You won't receive notifications between the times of day you set! On mobile, just tap the left-facing arrow in the top left corner to return to your channel.

Leaving a Channel
