In the run-up to July 1, 2017, when the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be rolled out nationwide, everybody is eager to know which items will be costlier and which cheaper.

New Delhi: In the run-up to July 1, 2017, when the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be rolled out nationwide, everybody is eager to know which items will be costlier and which cheaper. The government has categorised 1,211 items in a massive list under the various tax slab rates of GST and here’s a quick peek on what to expect.

0% Slab

Daily consumption items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meat, chicken, fish, eggs, milk, curd, butter milk, flour, bread and natural honey among other essential items have been put under the zero GST Slab.

5% Slab

Frozen vegetables & fruits, spices, tea, coffee, skimmed milk powder, rusk, sabudana, cashew nuts in shell, raisins, packaged foods, pizza bread, branded paneer are amongst few marked under this low tax slab.

12% Slab

Butter, cheese, ghee, animal fat, frozen meat products, sausages, packaged dry fruits, ketchups and sauces, namkeen, fruit juices etc attract 12% GST.

18% Slab

Cakes and pastries, biscuits, cornflakes, instant food mixes, jams, salad dressings, mixed seasonings and condiments, soups and ice-creams come under the ambit of this diverse GST slab rate.

28% Slab

Chocolate not containing cocoa, chocolate coated wafers, aerated water and drinks are categorised under the highest tax slab rate of 28%.

Overall, the basic items of daily consumption inside your kitchen are expected to cost lower giving some relief to your household budget while processed food items may inflate it. However, the exact implication of GST would be known only once it goes live!
