A video released by the New York Police Department (NYPD) shows the moments a police officer killed a man with a single gunshot as he held his mother in a chokehold while screaming that he had a knife inside an apartment in the Bronx area of the city. The incident happened in December.

Police officer Alex Morgese fired off a single shot at suspect Michael Dotel. He struck the suspect in the head and the suspect’s mother’s face was just inches away from his.
The suspect, who is of 30 years of age, fell backward to the ground and was later pronounced dead at the St. Barnabas Hospital. The incident occurred in New York City’s Harlem’s Bedford Park neighbourhood around midnight.
The police said they were responding to a call of a perpetrator who, while being high on drugs, was acting violently and armed with a knife. Dotel held his mother in a chokehold with his right arm around her neck and his left hand applying more pressure to his right arm and police opened fire when they saw the victim was losing consciousness.
“Do it, she’s gonna get it! Shoot me, shoot me,” Dotel screamed at police officer Morgese and his fellow police officer as Dotel held his month in front of him as a shield and dared cops to shoot him dead.
When Morgese asked where the knife was and to drop it, Dotel replied, “I got the knife,” footage shows. Morgese then again told him to drop the knife and then fired his weapon.
Police said when they reached the apartment, a younger woman ran out of the unit with apparent slice wounds to her face. It further added that two victims were wounded during the violent episode.
The husband of the victim told the New York Post that police had no choice but to shoot Dotel. “I was standing next to the officer. The officer told him three times to (put) down the knife, let her go. He said, “Either kill me or I’ll kill her,” the husband was quoted as saying by the newspaper. Dotel had a history of mental illness and three open criminal cases against him at the time of the shooting, the report further added.
