A Chinese man died of a suspected heart attack thirteen days after undergoing a major dental procedure in which 23 teeth were extracted and 12 implants were placed in a single day.

The man, identified only by his surname Huang, underwent the extensive treatment at Yongkang Deway Dental Hospital on August 14, according to the South China Morning Post. His age has not been disclosed.

The case became public when Huang’s daughter, surnamed Shu, posted about it online on September 2. She revealed that on August 28, her father suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and died.

“I never thought my dad would pass so quickly. He did not even get the chance to drive the new car we bought him,” she said.

She revealed that her father experienced severe pain in his teeth following the surgery. According to the signed consent form, the surgeon used the “immediate restoration” method.

The cost of the procedure was not disclosed, but the current price for a single dental implant at the hospital is 1,500 yuan (US$210).

The surgeon, known by the surname Yuan, has five years of experience and specialises in root canal procedures, the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, and fitting complete dentures.

On September 3, the Yongkang Municipal Health Bureau announced it was investigating the case due to the nature of the surgery and Huang’s death shortly afterward.

“Since there was a 13-day gap between the procedure and Huang’s death, we are still investigating the cause,” the hospital stated.

On September 6, a staff member from the clinic told the publication, “We will not be responding to this matter now as it has been handed over to our lawyer. If there are any updates, we will issue a statement; however, the investigation is ongoing.”
