A seven-year-old video of Greece’s elite guards, the Evzones, has gained steam on social media. With over 178,000 views on YouTube alone, the video shows the Evzones’ unique marching style. Nicknamed “mid-air foot ballet" by some viewers, their high kicks and precise movements — similar to ones seen during the Attari–Wagah border ceremony — are captivating.
The Evzones’ traditional attire, including a white skirt symbolizing 400 years of Ottoman rule and heavy pom-pommed shoes weighing over 3 kilograms, adds to the spectacle. The video has sparked curiosity online, with many intrigued by the guards’ unique movements.
Notably, the elaborate march holds deeper significance. Stationed at the Greek Parliament, the Evzones stand guard for one-hour shifts, three times within 48 hours. Their movements, accompanied by the clinking sound of the 60 nails on their shoes, known as Tsarouchia, mimic the sounds of horses. Legend has it that King Otto, homesick for Bavaria, had his guards imitate the clatter of horseshoes to comfort him.
The Evzones, elite soldiers with a rich history, were originally light infantry and mountain units within the Greek Army. Today, the term specifically refers to members of the Presidential Guard stationed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens’ Syntagma Square. Despite primarily ceremonial duties, Evzones are meticulously chosen volunteers from the Hellenic Army’s Infantry Corps. Identified as potential Evzones as early as basic training, candidates must meet a minimum height requirement of 1.95 meters (6′ 5").
Recognizable by their unique uniform, inspired by the clothing worn by Greek resistance fighters known as klephts, the Evzones have become an iconic symbol of Greek soldiers. The fustanella, resembling a kilt, is the most prominent feature of their attire. This distinctive uniform has made the Evzones popular worldwide, capturing the fascination of international audiences.
