New Delhi: An Independent candidate in Karnal is giving the Election Commission the blushes with his unusual request as he wants a condom as his election symbol.
Social activist Anand Prakash Sharma, who is contesting the Haryana Assembly elections next month, has opted for the rather unusual election symbol because his agenda focuses on issues like the spread of HIV/AIDS and the rights of sex workers.
As per the norm, as no other party or candidate is using the condom as their symbol, Sharma is free to do so.
But the Election Commission is now trying to convince him to opt for another symbol even as he is in no mood to give up.
Karnal Sub Division magistrate and Returning officer Mukesh Ahuja, however, claimed that Sharma has not yet approached him demanding condom as his election symbol.
Sharma and has written to the Chief Election Commissioner and Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Sajjan Singh demanding condom as his election symbol.
He is also planning to take legal advice on the issue if his demand is not met.
Over 1.31 crore voters across 90 constituencies in Haryana are eligible to exercise their franchise for the October 13 Assembly elections.
Counting of votes will take place on October 22.
