Veteran singer Kailash Kher has won a million hearts with his soulful voice. He is renowned for his immense contributions to Indian folk and Sufi music for which, the Indian Government has also honoured him with the Padma Shri Award in 2017. Currently, his band is one of the most successful and busiest ones in the industry as they travel across the globe for concerts and musical shows. However, the journey wasn’t an easy one.
Kailash Kher hails from a Kashmiri family and his father, Meharsingh Kher, was a renowned Indian folk music singer. From a very young age, he developed a deep passion for music and at the age of 14, he set out on a journey to make his musical dreams come true.
Reportedly, to sustain himself, Kailash Kher used to work part-time. He was a part of a handicraft business and used to export items to Germany. One day the business collapsed suddenly. However, fate had something else in store for him. He began earning his livelihood by giving music lessons to some children and reportedly, charged Rs 50 as a fee.
He later moved to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, to become a pandit. His mesmerising voice made its way into the hearts of the people as he used to sing by the banks of the Ganges during evening aartis. Many sadhus and saints used to often dance to his divine voice. As per reports, one day a Sadhu was so impressed by Kailash Kher’s voice that he praised him and said, “Your voice has magic. Do not worry. Lord Shiva will take care of everything.” Encouraged by the words of the sage, Kailash decided to continue his music journey and went to Mumbai, where his career took off.
Kailash Kher got a big break with the movie Andaaz featuring Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. He sang a Sufi song titled Rabba Ishq Na Hove and the track turned out to be an instant hit and soon he catapulted to fame. Kailash Kher has so far sung over 2,000 jingles and lent his voice to various government campaigns.
