There’s a fantastic piece of news for all GoT and HoD fans. House of the Dragon season 2 will premiere next year. The 10-episode prequel to HBO’s smash-hit show Game of Thrones, released in 2022, successfully retained every aspect that made the original show popular. Be it the fire-breathing dragons, the poisonous political traps, or the stellar cast, the final outcome was a spectacular production of Dance of the Dragons. Now, HBO has dropped hints about the upcoming season that will continue to chronicle the events of the great Targaryen civil war. According to Entertainment Weekly, the revelation came at a Warner Bros event in New York City on Thursday, November 2.

When is House of the Dragon season 2 releasing?

Head of HBO, Casey Bloys, confirmed that the next chapter in the Game of Thrones prequel show would return in the summer of 2024. He revealed that the shooting of House of the Dragon season 2 has been completed. “They are done shooting and in post. We hope to have that early summer,” Bloys was quoted as saying. It is important to note that only a rough estimation of the premiere has been out so far and the exact release date of House of the Dragon season 2 remains unclear.

What is House of the Dragon about?

Set nearly two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, the show chronicles yet another bloodied tale about the power tactics to occupy the Iron Throne. But this time, the major spotlight is put on the familial quarrel within the house of Targaryen. Notably, it is the same dynasty that produces Emilia Clarke’s sharp and cold queen Daenerys Targaryen in its predecessor series in GoT.

The squabbles arise from King Viserys dream of wanting a male heir for the Iron Throne. But after witnessing the death of his beloved wife during childbirth, he reluctantly names his first-born daughter young Rhaenyra to be the successor. Retaining Daenerys’ aura, she is both cynical and astute, seizing up her chances at the right moments. The civil war began when the chosen heir had to fight against usurper Aegon II Targaryen. He is Rhaenyra’s half-brother conceived by her stepmother Alicent Hightower, who was once her childhood best friend.

The season 1 concluded with a vicious Dragon battle that claimed the life of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys leaving viewers on a cliffhanger as to how the queen will avenge the death.
