Subramaniapuram was written, produced, and directed by Sasikumar. In the film, he cast all the new actors, including Jai, Swathi, Samuthirakani, Ganja Karuppu, and himself, in pivotal roles.
The music for the film was composed by James Vasanthan, the cinematography was handled by S. R. Kathir and the editing was done by Raja Mohammad.
The movie takes place in the Subramaniapuram area of Madurai city and revolves around a convict who is released from prison in 2008 after serving 28 years, and an unknown person stabs him right outside the prison gates. The police are baffled at this, as the convict had never spoken to anyone inside the prison and refused to meet anyone coming to visit him from the outside during his time in prison. They are stunned that someone who has had hatred against him for 28 years would stab him when he went outside the jail. A flashback to 1980 narrates the events that led to the stabbing.
The film was released on July 4, 2008. Although the film was made on a low budget, it received critical acclaim for its original script, expert direction, screenplay, editing, fresh music, accurate sets, and costumes to resurrect Madurai from the 1980s.
According to reports, the film was shot in 85 days and became one of the biggest commercial successes of the year.
The film was dubbed into Malayalam with the same title, Telugu with Ananthapuram in 1980, and Kannada with Prem Adda in 2012.
Director Anurag Kashyap acknowledged twice that this film inspired his Gangs of Wasseypur series, once in 2010 and again on the film’s tenth anniversary.
