There is no excuse for missing best and most reliable restaurants in Delhi/NCR. So when I planned my recent visit to Kingdom of Dreams, I decided to drop in at the Rajasthan restaurant just to understand if it exudes the ‘royal’ feeling which we all associate the state of Rajasthan with. Whether it is the majestic forts, its interesting traditions or the amazing food that’s available – there is no one way to properly describe the diverse experience that Rajasthan offers. Keeping in mind the unique feeling it gives, and with high expectations, I entered the restaurant.
Décor: Much like the stunning forts and palaces that Rajasthan is dotted with, this restaurant is also enchanting, courtesy its impressive interiors. While interesting large paintings adorn the walls, elegant chandeliers cast a beautiful glow. Since the restaurant offers traditional seating– complete with low cushions and chowki - it might not be comfortable for those who find it difficult to fold their legs while eating or turn up for a meal are wearing body-fitting, short clothes.
Food: The chirpy waiter offered me Chaach - tangy, spicy and completely refreshing - and gleefully said, “You’ ll love our Thali.” The Thali comes with the usual suspects: Dal Bati Churma, Ker Sangri, Paneer Ki Subzi, Gatte Ki Subzi, Rajasthani Kadhi and Puris. But no matter how many times you have tried it, not giving in to the temptation of a typical Rajasthani thali is a task. Each of the items that were served to me were crunchy, chewy and delectable.
No Rajasthani thali is complete without one of the most popular dish - Dal Bati Churma. Even before I could have tried any other food item, the Batis with ghee dripping off them - truly enticing - was what I gorged on. And its combination with Panchkuti Dal and Churma was completely appetizing.
The puri glazed with oil and accompanied with Gatte Ki Subzi is just as competent as the previous dish that I tried – Ker Sangri. Prepared with full honesty to all spices used, it was satisfyingly filling. If you are really fond of Rajasthani kadhi, chances are you might ask for extra serving. Even though the portion is substantial, its taste is such that you’d want to have more of it.
Gatte Ki Subzi – the popular staple in a traditional Rajasthani thali – had the besan nuggets cooked to perfection. They were soft, easy to chew and with the right Rajasthani flavour.
Even though there wasn’t any space for dessert, I once again gave in to the temptation and enjoyed gorging on the Moong Dal Halwa. One of the favourite dessert for all food lovers, it was just the right way to end my experience at the restaurant.
Our Opinion: A lot better than most of the restaurants pretending to offer Rajasthani food.
