Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar is observed by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. It is a celebration of the descent of the word of God, Quran, from heaven to the earth. Observing a month of fasting is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Ramadan, a time of spiritual reflection and self-introspection, begins with fasting from dawn until sunset. Suhur, the pre-dawn meal before the fast is followed by Iftar, a meal post sunset that breaks the fast. The elderly, pregnant women and women going through menstrual bleeding and diabetes sufferers are exempted from fasting in Ramadan.
