Year ender: Celebs industry lost in 2008
Many celebrities like Heath Ledger, Paul Newman expired last year.

As the year 2008 ends, there are many celebrities whom their fans will not get to see again on the silver screen next year.

Here are some of them :

Heath Ledger

The year 2008 began with the shocking death of academy award nominated Australian actor, Heath Legder in January at the age of 28. He died of an accidental prescription-drug overdose, and many months later, his death was still tough to fathom. He earned great raves and Oscar buzz, for his frightening performance as the Joker in the Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight.

Known for his terrific performance in The Brokeback Mountain, this Australian is remembered by one and all.

“Yes, I mean everybody in Australia - not just the acting community, but everyone - is really deeply shocked. I think, like everybody, it's just a very, very, very sad and tragic loss,” says actor Cate Blanchett.

Charleston Heston

Another titan from old Hollywood - Charlton Heston- passed away at the age of 84, on April 5 after battling Alzheimer's disease. Charleston was a towering star of 1950s and 1960s and with his powerful bass and rugged athleticism, he was a natural to play heroic figures like Moses, Michelangelo and El Cid.

Heston got his golden statue for playing the title role in Ben-HurM in 1959.

Sydney Pollack

With the death of Sydney Pollack, Hollywood lost another acclaimed movie-maker. He died of cancer aged 73 on May 26. Director of some mainstream hits like Tootsie, Absence of Malice and Out of Africa, Pollack imbued each film with a ferocity of craft. Pollack was no slouch as a character actor, either: One of his last appearances, as a shady lawyer in Michael Clayton, was pitch-perfect. A fitting exit from an exceptional artisan.

Paul Newman

The Hollywood legend died on September 26 at the age of 83. The Oscar winning superstar personified cool as the anti-hero of such films as Hud, Cool Hand Luke and The Color of Money followed by a second act as an activist, race car driver and popcorn impresario. He died following a long battle with cancer.
