BANGALORE: India's Picasso M F Husain belonged to India and his demise was one of the saddest episodes of our times, said External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Friday.
"He has passed away under unfortunate circumstances. We are proud to say that Husain was from India and blossomed as an artist here. Every Indian should be proud that he was from our country," said Krishna.A section of society, said the minister, could not digest the painter's popularity. "A section amongst us is focused on perpetuating extraneous constraints. It doesn't speak well of our civil society," he added.

On a query about what might have made Husain go on a selfimposed exile, Krishna said that the painter's work was appreciated, even when he used to stay in India. "The question is under what circumstances he couldn't come back to India," he replied.
