PARADIP: The anti-Posco agitation gathered strength with environmentalist, agricultural scientist and activist Vandana Shiva joining the dharna at Gobindpur on Thursday even as the State Government stepped up work for construction of boundary wall around the land already acquired for the project. She participated in the ongoing dharna by the locals against the Posco project and extended support to the agitators. “There is no justification for setting up the steelplant on the fertile land where rural economy has prospered with multi-crop farming and other economic activities like fisheries and plantation,” she said. Shiva said the vast forest cover and ecology of the area would be destroyed if the project was set up. Justifying the use of children in the agitation, she said kids have every right to participate in the stir as the issue involves their very existence and future. “Moreover, the children are accompanied by their parents and seniors,” she said observing that the children were being imparted education at the dharna site. The district administration on the other hand increased the pace of construction of the boundary wall and rehabilitation colony on the already acquired land at Polang in Gadkujang panchayat. Other works like sand levelling and tree felling also continued in Nuagaon and Gadkujang panchayats without any untoward incident, said Ersama BDO Murlidhar Swain. The administration has also initiated enumeration and identification of betel vine labourers at Nuagaon and Gadkujang panchayats to fulfil the demands of the villagers, he added.
