CHENNAI: Radios have rapidly gone out of fashion in Tamil Nadu, which has recorded the highest penetration of television sets, according to Houselisting and Housing Census Data 2011. According to the census, the state is next only to New Delhi when compared to the penetration of TV sets. Interestingly, 87 per cent of households in the state have TV sets when compared to the national average of 47.2 per cent.This is a 46 per cent rise when compared with the the census in 2001. In rural areas, the spurt has been 61 per cent during the last decade while in urban areas there has been a rise of 28 per cent in ownership of television sets, the survey added.Interestingly, the radio or transistor is rapidly going out of fashion in Tamil Nadu with only 23 per cent still preferring the medium. There has been a decline of 21 per cent but this should be taken into account keeping in mind that census officials haven’t taken mobile phone radio into account, census officials said. Interestingly, computers, laptops and the Internet hasn’t penetrated much deeper with only 11 per cent households using desktop computers or laptops while only four per cent have Internet facility. The census reveals the penetration of Internet at eight per cent in urban areas as compared to one per cent in rural areas.Meanwhile, the census also revealed that 75 per cent households use landline telephone or mobile phone with 84 per cent in urban and 66 per cent in rural areas. The penetration of mobile phones is 69 per cent and landline is 13 per cent.
