New Delhi: Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday for irregularities in a Commonwealth Games corruption case.
Here is a timeline of events relating to the former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman's role in the investigations into the multi-crore scam.
April 25: Kalmadi is arrested under Sections 120 B and 420 (criminal conspiracy and cheating) of the Indian Penal Code in the Commonwealth Games Time Scoring Equipment scam.
April 24: Sacked Commonwealth Games Organising committee (OC) chief Suresh Kalmadi faces what's widely believed the toughest grilling that he has been subjected to so far by the Central Bureau of Investigation. A two-member CBI team has returned from London after carrying out extensive investigations in the Queens baton relay scam. The CBI has got some new leads about how Kalmadi put his signatures on this request from another one of his former colleagues Sanjay Mohindroo for releasing a sum of 146000 British pounds.
April 5: The final report, prepared by the VK Shunglu Committee investigating CWG scam, slams Kalmadi, former Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy and CWG OC CEO Jarnail Singh. The report observed that poor coordination between Kalmadi and the government-appointed officers aggravated the chaos. The report also slams former Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Redddy for washing his hands off the entire mess around delays of construction of stadiums and CWG village.
March 15: Kalmadi is questioned by the CBI in connection with the alleged corruption cases related to the Games. The CBI questioned Kalmadi over the alleged irregularities in the Rs 107 crore time-keeping contract awarded to Swiss company Omega for the Games. Till now the CBI has not named Kalmadi as an accused in any of the eight FIRs that have been filed in the Commonwealth Games corruption cases.
March 1: The Central Bureau of Investigation searches Kalmadi's two bank lockers in Pune in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam. Kalmadi has, however, been claiming that he was not involved in any scam. "I can vouch that I have not gained financially even a single rupee out of these games and if proved otherwise I am prepared to step down as a Member of Parliament," he said a few days ago.
Februray 24: Kalmadi hits out at the authorities and says that the OC cannot be singled out and blamed in the CWG scam. His aggression comes a day after his closest aide Lalit Bhanot is arrested by the CBI alongwith VK Verma - two of the senior most officials of the CWG OC. In his defence, Kalmadi says all approvals were obtained from the Sports Ministry.
Februray 24: Suresh Kalmadi writes a letter on the ongoing investigations in the Commonwealth Games scam, saying officers of the Organising Committee have always co-operated with the investigating agencies, making all documents available to them and presenting themselves at the CBI offices whenever called.
February 15:A Games catering facility has become the first big albatross around ousted Organising Committee (OC) Chief Suresh Kalmadi. CNN-IBN learns that the PM-appointed Shunglu Panel enquiring into all aspects of the Commonwealth Games is set to hold Kalmadi guilty for delaying the process of awarding the catering contract.
February 11: The CBI arrests Kalmadi's personal assistant Shekhar Deorukhkar in Pune. Deorukhkar has been produced before the Shivaji Nagar court with the CBI seeking his transit remand. He was arrested in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam.
January 5: Kalamdi is being questioned by the CBI in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the conduct of the sports event. The CBI is questioning Kalmadi on a host of issues including the overlays contracts, his role in the procurement of the timescoring unit and the aerostat. He is also likely to be probed about the payments made during the Queens Baton relay.
January 24Kalmadi is sacked as the chairman of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee. The decision to remove Kalmadi is taken by Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Ajay Maken in the interest of impartial investigation into the alleged cases of corruption related to Commonwealth Games.
December 27: Kalmadi has reportedly shipped out incriminating documents related to the Games to the USA. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sources have told CNN-IBN that the documents are reportedly with Kalmadi's nephew Rajender Rao in Minnesota, US.
December 24: CBI conducting raids at Kalmadi’s offices and residences in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune. The CBI also swooped at Kalmadi's residence in central Mumbai.
September 23: Commonwealth Games Organising Commmittee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi makes a public appearance after a long time and put up a brave face, saying the problems at the Games Village are resolved now and all is well with the Games.
