ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Saturday acquitted Tomin J Thachankary and seven others in the custodial torture case of Punnappra Prakashan. Retired police personnel SP Sheik Anwar Sahib, DySP Peter Babu, SI Haridas, ASIs’ Kesavankutty Achari, Jaffer, Pookoya, and Alappuzha South station ASI Abubacker were among the acquitted. The verdict was delivered by CJM P Ragini. Punnappra Prakashan was taken into custody and tortured by the police after the death of Suja from Punnappra, in 1991. Following the verdict Thachankary said, “someone mislead Prakashan and the dragged me into the case. The truth finally came out into the light.” Boby Kuruvila, a social activist, said that he will approach the High Court against the verdict.
