New Delhi: Days after the Centre gave a go ahead to bull-taming sport Jallikattu, the Supreme Court has decided to hear a bunch of petitions challenging the order. The apex court will hear the matter on Tuesday.
This comes even as the Tamil Nadu government has welcomed the decision of the central government to lift ban on the festival. State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his ‘prompt response' to her government's appeal for allowing the sport.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the AIADMK chief had said, "I am very grateful to you for your prompt response in the matter, which has enabled the conduct of Jallikattu."
She said the sport "upholds traditional cultural values and traditions of Tamil Nadu and has great historical significance and also ensures the conservation of native germ plasm and continuance of traditional breeds of indigenous cattle".
The CM said she was very happy to learn about the Environment Ministry's notification, "which has paved the way for the conduct of Jallikattu in different parts of Tamil Nadu as part of the Pongal festivities".
Though the Centre has allowed the sport, it has also put some conditions, saying bullock cart race shall be organised on a proper track, which shall not exceed two kilometres.
In case of Jallikattu, the moment the bull leaves the enclosure, it should be tamed within a radial distance of 15 metre and it should also be ensured that the bulls are put to proper testing by authorities of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department to ensure that they are in good physical condition to participate in the event.
The Centre also specified that performance enhancement drugs should not be administered to the bulls.
