Amid reports of an encounter involving suspects behind the killing of a 22-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district last week, additional director general of police (law and order) Amitabh Yash in an exclusive conversation with CNN-News18 on Thursday said he could only confirm that five people had been arrested in connection with the case.

Ram Gopal Mishra was killed by a mob after communal clashes broke out during a Durga idol immersion procession in Bahraich on Sunday.

“I don’t have the complete information. I’ve only received report that Bahraich police have arrested five people in connection with the case,” Yash told CNN-News18.

Reports have emerged that two suspects connected to the case were allegedly fleeing to Nepal when they were shot at by the Uttar Pradesh police. The men have been identified as Sarfaraz alias Rinku and Talib by the reports.

Violence broke out in Bahraich’s Maharajganj on October 13 over the alleged playing of loud music outside a mosque during the Durga Puja immersion procession, in which Ram Gopal Mishra died of gunshot injuries.

The incident triggered vandalism and arson in the area as houses, shops, showrooms, hospitals and vehicles were torched by mobs, prompting the police to lodge multiple FIRs against unidentified rioters and some named accused.

Amidst the tense situation, a video of Amitabh Yash gained attention on social media, as he was seen courageously chasing rioters, armed with a pistol. His brave actions earned him widespread praise.
