People in coastal Ponnani live under Constant fear of Sea surge

The Irrigation Department has lost lakhs of rupees, which had been spent for the construction of the sea wall with sand packs. “The sand packs are not a permanent solution for sea surge. It is not strong enough to resist the waves with high speed and strength. We need a permanent rock wall in the area to protect our households from the sea surge,” Abdulla, a native, said. Jeelani Nagar, Mulla Road, Nalamkallu, and the backside of the Ponnani Yatheem Khana are the worst affected areas of sea surge. Thirteen houses were destroyed in the sea surge occurred here one month ago. The families who had been living in these houses are still remaining in the relief camps. “We have approached almost all the officials and political leaders for the protection of our lives and properties. Everyone offered promises but nothing has come in reality until now,” Abdulla added. The Chief Minister has shown interest to visit the place when Youth Congress leaders from the Ponnani constituency approached him. “We have succeeded in informing the Chief Minister about the worries of the people here,” Youth Congress leader Siddikh Panthaloor said. Ponnani Tahasildar K Moosakkutty said that there was a plan to construct a rock sea wall in the area soon.
