Baghdad: Saddam Hussein's lawyer has asked a Baghdad court for an independent investigation into claims by the ousted Iraqi leader that he has been tortured by his captors.
He said that Saddam is subjected to both physical and psychological torture in order to weaken his ability to defend himself in the court.
In the last court session on December 22, Saddam Hussein said that the US soldiers used to beat him up.
Even while the White House dismisses these claims, his defence team takes up this matter rather seriously.
"We are asking the court, and we are going to present it with a written request in the upcoming two days, to get Saddam Hussein examined by an independent medical committee that does not include lawyers or any of his enemies, to assess his situation," Khalil Al Duleimi, Hussein's chief lawyer, said.
Saddam's lawyer has a long list of complains against his captors. He alleges that the former Iraqi President brought to court hours before the session starts. He is put in a very small cell.
Saddam is subjected to solitary confinement in the prison court prior to the session. When the court sessions are long he isn't allowed to change his clothes, the cell lacks sanitary facilities, and he stays in the same clothes for five or six days.
"Saddam Hussein complained numerous times to the judge that he is placed in a cell that lacks the basic human needs and that is vary small," added Hussein's lawyer.
The trial has been adjourned until 24th January. His defence council hopes that Saddam will have a better deal next time.
