The Paryushan Parva or Paryushana is one of the most significant annual festivals for the Jain community in India. Paryushana signifies “residing and uniting.” The 8-day festival involves fasting, prayers and meditation to heighten spiritual intensity. This holy celebration falls in the Jain month of Bhadrapada, which in Gregorian calendar terms is similar to August or September.

This year, the Paryushan Parva began on August 31 and it will conclude on September 7. The final day of the parva is known as ‘Samvatsari’ or the Day of Forgiveness. The occasion involves seeking and offering forgiveness to promote peace and reconciliation.

Observed by the Svetambara and Digambara groups, Paryushana is a period dedicated to introspection, self-control and spiritual renewal. The word “Paryushan” refers to the time when Jains gather to concentrate on their spiritual activities and purge themselves of karmic impurities. For Svetambaras, the celebration lasts eight days, while for Digambaras, it lasts for 10 days.
