Jagan refuses to budge on Telangana, fast enters fourth day

Jaganmohan Reddy's indefinite hunger strike against a separate statehood for Telangana entered the fourth day. JDS holds a 1-day-meet after the humiliating defeat in the last week's Lok Sabha by-polls.

Andhra Pradesh

The jailed YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy has refused to end his fast against Telangana. His indefinite hunger strike in the prison has entered the fourth day. Prison authorities are likely to admit him to the jail hospital, if he does not call it off in a day.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Seemandhra has agreed to allow pilgrims to visit the Venkateshwara temple. The JAC had earlier decided to block all entry and exit points to Tirupati on Wednesday and Thursday, opposing Telangana. The JAC has now allowed the traffic on Tirupati bypass road. Pilgrims can enter Tirupati town by foot and can proceed to the hill temple in private vehicles. The JAC has been forced to relax the bandh keeping the interest of pilgrims in mind. The Temple employees are also holding a protest march against Telangana on September 30.

Karnataka

The JDS which suffered a humiliating defeat in the last week's Lok Sabha by-polls is holding a one day meeting to asses the situation in Bangalore, on Wednesday. All state leaders are participating in this meeting. A section in the party is demanding party's state chief HD Kumaraswamy's resignation. There is also a talk of installing a non-Gowda family member as the JDS state chief. But, not many are keen to take up the job.

The wholesale price onion has touched Rs 5000 per 100 kg at the Hubli market in Karnataka. Karnataka is the second largest producer of onion contributing 19 per cent of India's total output. The unprecedented heavy rain which has battered the state in the last three months has also caused a lot of damage to standing crops across the state. Onion production is likely to go down during this harvest season.

Tamil Nadu

DMK Chief M Karunanidhi has warned that the future of Tamil fishermen would be in a state of permanent danger if the Centre failed to step in and put an end to the attacks on them by the Sri Lankan Navy. Reacting to the arrest of 35 Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, he said "We must put an end to it," he said. Meanwhile the MDMK chief Vaiko has asked the United Nations to hold a referendum in the Tamil areas of Sri Lanka.
