Orissa ex-CM Nandini Satpathy dead
Satpathy, 76, was a writer and was given the prestigious Sahitya Bharati Samman Award in 1998.

Bhubaneswar: Orissa’s first and only woman chief minister Nandini Satpathy died on Friday evening following a cardiac arrest.

Satpathy, 76, is survived by two sons. She was taken to the Capital Hospital in the afternoon where she died at 2020 hours IST, her son and BJD MP Tathagat Satpathy said.

Nandini was the chief minister of Orissa twice in 1972 and 1974 and was known for her dynamic leadership.

She was MLA for seven times and was also Union information and broadcasting deputy minister in 1966.

Nandini was not only one of the few dynamic women political leaders in the country of her time but also an eminent writer.

She has been awarded with Kendriya Sahitya Academy award for her literary works.

On her demise many known political leaders have expressed deep condolence.

"She was such a caring leader and will always be remembered for her statesmanship. It is a great loss for all of us here," Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.

She would be cremated on Saturday.
