VELLORE: Only 15 per cent of the free dhotis and sarees meant for distribution via Public Distribution System to persons below the poverty line were reportedly obtained in Vellore. Free dhotis and sarees are distributed to eligible persons before Pongal every year as a festival gift. However, eligible card holders reportedly received clothing only on the inauguration day. According to government officials, the code of conduct that was in force for the local body elections and lack of funds due to the change in government had led to the problem in ordering dhotis and sarees.A total of about 30 lakh dhotis and sarees were ordered for distribution in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Kancheepuram. However, only 15 per cent of the total number ordered, around 4,24,000 sarees and 3,82,000 dhotis had been procured. It may be recalled that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had made a statement to extend the period of distribution till Tamil New Year in April.
