Srinagar: The ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday hailed the decision of Assembly Speaker Mubarak Gul to summon former Army Chief VK Singh to the House over allegations of payoffs to politicians, saying it was a "victory for democracy".
"We welcome the historic decision to summon Gen Singh before the assembly. It is a victory for democracy," National Conference said in a statement in Srinagar.
Giving his ruling on a privilege motion moved by NC ministers, the Speaker said he would summon the former Army Chief very soon.
"By accepting the privilege motion to summon Gen Singh the demand of the people of the state has been fulfilled and democratic values have been strengthened," the statement said.
The party said it had become imperative to summon the former Army Chief and ask him to reveal the names of persons who were alledegly paid money.
"Singh's allegations have brought every politician under the scanner and people of the state have the right to know which politicians and ministers were paid money (by the army)," the statement said.
