CHENNAI: The statement of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Moscow that the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) will be commissioned in a few week’s time has evoked mixed reactions.“I strongly condemn the announcement of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh made in Moscow that the first reactor of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant will be operationalised within two weeks,” P Nedumaran, president of Makkal Urimai Kootamaippu, said. Though the Central government has been holding talks with the representatives of the people’s movement against KKNPP, the PM’s announcement clearly shows that the talks were held only cheat the people of Tamil Nadu, Nedumaran said. However, DMK president M Karunanidhi made an ambiguous statement, saying: “If the Prime Minister has said that the works would begin within two weeks, he would have said so only after consulting all those concerned in this issue. If the PM had announced this after consulting all, it would be a welcome one.”TNCC chief Gnanadesikan said that plant would have to be operated and that he was definitely certain about that.CPM leader Ramakrishnan said, the experts committee, formed by the Centre on KKNPP, should study the plant and certify that it was safe. “So far, the committee has been holding talks and has not presented its findings to the people. Therefore, the report of the committee should be releasedbefore the first unit starts functioning.”CPI State leader, D Pandian, said, “We have nothing to say. The agreement is between India and Russia and we have nothing to do with the issue.”
