CHENNAI: A State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) driver was killed,  when the bus he was driving collided with a lorry near Vandalur in Kancheepuram  early on Sunday. At least 20 passengers were hurt in the mishap.Sources said the SETC bus left Salem for Chennai on Saturday night and Palanisamy (25) was behind the wheel. Around 5 am, when the vehicle was near Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur, it collided with a lorry coming in the opposite direction. The front portion of the bus was badly damaged in the impact and the driver, who was caught amid the mangled remains, was killed on the spot. Twenty passengers, who were injured, were admitted at the Chromepet government hospital. Five are stated to be serious.On information, a police team arrived at the scene. Fire and rescue personnel from Maraimalai Nagar and Tambaram used gas cutters to clear the front portion of the bus and recovered the driver’s body. The Otteri police have registered a case and launched a search for the lorry driver. Traffic was affected in the area for sometime due to the accident.Suicide bid by prisonerA PMK functionary who was arrested and lodged at the Puzhal Central Prison here in connection with a murder case, attempted suicide on the jail premises on Sunday. Sources said Ilanchezhian was arrested on January 6 by CBI in connection with a murder at Villupuram and lodged in Puzhal prison. On Sunday evening, he tried to hang himself inside the jail using his lungi, reportedly because his attempts to secure bail had failed. Fellow inmates noticed it and alerted the jail authorities. Ilanchezhian was taken to the government hospital in Royapettah for treatment and later taken back to the prison.
