BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to take 50 acres out of 55 acres land from Leprosy Rehabilitation Centre in Sumanahalli on Magadi Road and merge it with the Beggars’ Rehabilitation Centre’s land. In a PIL, Rashtrotthan Sankalp had challenged the state government’s decision to transfer Beggars’ Colony land to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). The 308 acres and 3 guntas of land was allotted for to Beggars’ Rehabilitation Centre by the Maharaja of Mysore Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar in 1944. However, the government is taking away the beggars’ land and using it for commercial purposes, the petitioner contended and sought all the land allotted to others be taken back and given for rehabilitation of beggars.
