Raipur: A large group of heavily armed Maosists fired rockets and opened heavy gunfire at a camp of paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh eary on Thursday morning.
While the attack was repulsed, security officials are baffled to find that the Maoists came armed with countrymade rockets and launchers.
Kondagaon Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh said that after the gunfight fight ended, the ITBP personnel found four improvised rockets during the search operation. Only one of the four rockets had exploded.
According to Singh the rockets were assembled by the Maoists as there were no mark of any ordinance factory on them. He added that further investigations are on to find out how far the Maoists have progressed in making sophisticated weapons.
Security experts, too, added that police need to introspect because there have been several claims that Maoists were no longer a major force but the presence of sophisticated and lethal weapons in their arsenal proves otherwise.
In the gunfight in Kondagaon more than 600 rounds were fired from both sides. There have been no casualties on the ITBP side.
The attack was launched at the company base of the 41st battalion in Ranapal area by about 100 heavily armed Maoists.
