PUDUCHERRY: A lorry driver, who tried to flee after the vehicle he was driving rammed a motorcycle, was chased and beaten up by a mob here on Sunday. He later succumbed at a Public Health Centre.According to Villianur police station inspector S Bascarane, a lorry with a Karanataka registration and driven by Saravanan, rammed a motorcycle near Vazhuthavoor, crushing it. When a few persons who witnessed the accident started shouting at him, Saravanan tried to speed away from the spot.However, they gave chase and intercepted Saravanan near Koodapakkam. The mob then dragged him out of the lorry, beat him up and demanded compensation for the damage to the motorcycle. Upon getting word, the police rushed to the spot and took Saravanan to Villianur Public Health Centre. However, the driver developed fits and collapsed in the vehicle in which he was taken to the PHC, where he was declared ‘brought dead,’ inspector Bascarane said. His body was subsequently taken to the Government General Hospital for a post mortem. A case was registered under the relevant sections as the PHC’s preliminary report did not suggest anything about the external injuries Saravanan suffered, the inspector said. A decision on whether the sections should be altered to murder charges would be made only after getting the post mortem report, he added.
