Paris: Ivan Ljubicic was eliminated from the third round of the French Open on Friday, losing to Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-4, 6-7 (4), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The seventh-seeded Croat reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros in 2006, but had never previously been past the third round.
Ljubicic has not been past the third round in any tournament on clay this season.
The 29th-seeded Volandri is the first Italian to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam event since Renzo Furlan in 1995.
Volandri beat top-ranked Roger Federer on his way to the semi-finals of the Rome Masters last month, and next plays No. 9 Tommy Robredo of Spain, who beat Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4, 6-0.
