In 2012, there were 18 deaths, including two suicides, inside Tihar Jail.

New Delhi: The alleged suicide of the main accused in the Delhi gangrape case, Ram Singh, poses serious questions on the authorities of one of India's best prisons, the Tihar Jail. Ram Singh, who was reportedly under suicide watch, was found hanging inside his cell on Monday morning and reports say he cut his mat into a rope and hanged himself to the grill of the cell. This came even as he was not alone in his cell and there were two other inmates inside the cell.

However, this is not the first time that the Tihar Jail authorities have had to face such questions. There have been instances in the past that pose questions to the Tihar Jail authorities.

- In 2012, there were 18 deaths, including two suicides, inside Tihar Jail.

- In November 2012, Sonu Punjaban, accused in a sex racket, attempted to commit suicide by hanging herself.

- In June 2011, there were reports of special treatment being extended to Commonwealth Games scam accused Suresh Kalmadi in Tihar.

- In June 2011, Kalmadi was found dining with the jail superintendent.

- In June 2011, a Tihar Jail official was found entertaining sex workers.

- In June 2011, convicts in the Nitish Katara murder case, Vikas and Vishal Yadav were also allowed some liberties.

- In February 2004, Phoolan Devi's killer fled the prison.
