The Kerala Congress (Jacob) which was heading towards a rift following the internal feuds, has come up with a compromise formulae to deal with the crisis. The state committee meet of the party held here on Tuesday, entrusted party chairman Johny Nelloor and party leader and Minister Anoop Jacob with the duty to bring in certain amendments to the party’s constitution.
The amendments are aimed to be a damage control exercise within the party, by making the chairman and the leader two equal power centres. In effect, it takes away certain powers that were vested with the leader so far.
“A decision was taken to make amendments to the party constitution. From now onwards a decision regarding the party matters pertaining to the police will be made jointly by the leader and the chairman. In case the party is not able to make a decision regarding an issue, the chairman and the leader will make the final decision after joint consultation. In the case of civil, criminal and revenue cases, the chairman, leader and other office bearers will jointly handle the issues,” Kerala Congress (Jacob) chairman Johny Nelloor told Express.
Tuesday’s state committee meet witnessed certain minor issues while discussing the power struggles and the decision on the constitution amendments. However, party leader and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob played down the issue stating that it is only a media hype.
“The attempt is to ensure that collective decisions are being taken based on a joint consultation with the leaders,” Jacob said while speaking to Express.
