Jamai Sashti 2024: Hilsa Fish Prices Surge Before The Festival
A fish seller in Cooch Behar's Bhabaniganj market said that there is a sufficient supply of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh.

Jamai Sashti is one of the prominent Bengali festivals where all the Bengali mothers-in-law prepare a feast for their sons-in-law. It will be celebrated on June 8, 2024, and the food will comprise an assortment of Bengali delicacies to be served to the son-in-laws. As per Local 18 Bengal, before this festival, the prices of the Hilsa Fish have increased in the market.

Ajay Bhagat, a fish seller in Cooch Behar’s Bhabaniganj market, said, “Currently, Hilsa fish weighing 800 to 900 grams is being sold in the market for around Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,800. However, there is a possibility that the price will increase a little more during Jamai Sashti. But the sellers are relieved about one thing, i.e- a sufficient supply of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh will be available in the market.”

Ajay added that the Hilsa fish is currently available in the market of Diamond Harbour. According to him, the price of this variety of fish from Bangladesh will be comparatively higher than the fish sold in Diamond Harbour. He further said that the price is likely to be Rs 2,000 per kg.

A consumer named Sadrul Molla also expressed his views regarding this situation. He said that currently, everyone is eager to buy the Hilsa fish at the available market prices. According to him, if the rates of the Hilsa fish increase a little more, it will be impossible for the natives of West Bengal to eat this particular delicacy. Sadrul said that the people are feeling slightly relaxed since on Jamai Sashti, Padma Ilish fish will be available.

According to him, people will go for this particular fish only since they have no other alternative available due to the high rates of the Hilsa fish. One of the most preferred fish varieties in Bangladesh, Padma Ilish fish is called Tenualosa Ilisha. This Hilsa is widely found in Bangladesh from the Bay of Bengal to our rivers.

During Jamai Sashti, sons-in-law and daughters are welcomed into the house. The mothers-in-law carry a thali which contains grains, and five different fruits. They then sprinkle grains on the heads of sons-in-law and give them their blessings. Then they make a mark on their sons-in-law’s heads with curd. The final ritual has the mothers-in-law tying a yellow thread on the sons-in-law’s thread and praying for their long and prosperous life.
